Dell UK is holding a computer-recycling day at its European Headquarters on Saturday 17 September. Anyone is welcome to bring along any unwanted computer equipment from home that will be collected packed and recycled, at no charge. The company allows up to five computers and related equipment per car, so IBM won't be allowed to empty its warehouse full of old PCs onto Dell. The company says that employee 'volunteers' will be on hand to help unload those clunky old servers. Dell says it will accept any make or model of computer-related equipment including system units, monitors, keyboards, scanners, all-in-one machines, mice and printers will be accepted on the day. However, kit deemed to be 'consumer electronics' like televisions, photocopiers (?) and mobile phones will not be accepted. The company says that people bringing equipment are responsible for wiping data from their hard drives before taking them to the event. Removable media such as floppy disks and zip drives should also be removed. The company will not accept any responsibility for data privacy issues once the machines have been left behind. Jean Cox-Kearns, the delightfully titled Take Back and Recycling Manager for Dell EMEA, said, 'There is a real lack of understanding of the options open to consumers looking to dispose of their old computer hardware. Many do not know you can recycle or donate your old equipment to charity today, at no cost at all. Dell is committed to making computer recycling easy and educating consumers that 'no computer should go to waste' - holding this recycling day in September will help do that.'
